Originally established as the Houston Bowl to replace the defunct Bluebonnet Bowl, the game was renamed the galleryfurniture.com Bowl for its first two years due to a corporate sponsorship deal with local Houston furniture giant Gallery Furniture and its famous owner, "Matress Mack" Jim McIngvale. The 2000 game featured a matchup between the East Carolina Pirates and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, with East Carolina winning 40-27.
